Jakarta, September 27, 2024 - PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM), or ANTAM, strengthens its steps in mineral downstream with the commencement of the first bauxite injection phase at the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) Mempawah Project.
This phase marks the commissioning stage of the project, which is the result of cooperation between ANTAM and PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM), Member of PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (Persero) (MIND ID) – The State-Owned Enterprise of the Mining Industry.
The inauguration of the first bauxite injection was carried out by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, on Tuesday (24/9/2024). Several important officials, including SOE Minister Erick Thohir, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, and Directors and Commissioners from MIND ID, INALUM, and ANTAM, also attended the event.
ANTAM President Director Nico Kanter emphasized that SGAR Mempawah will be a key pillar in the national aluminium industry supply chain.
“SGAR Mempawah plays a central role in creating an integrated aluminium industry ecosystem from upstream to downstream, as well as meeting the needs of other industries that require high-quality alumina,” said Nico.
ANTAM will supply bauxite ore from its mines in West Kalimantan as the main raw material for alumina production at SGAR Mempawah. To achieve the production target of 1 million tons of alumina, SGAR requires around 3.3 million tons wet metric ton (wmt) of wet bauxite.
With the existence of SGAR, ANTAM's position in the national bauxite supply chain is getting stronger and in line with efforts to support the downstream of the mineral industry in Indonesia.
“As a manager of mineral resources, We are committed to optimizing the potential of bauxite to increase the competitiveness of the national industry. We believe, with the operation of SGAR Mempawah, Indonesia's position as a major player in the global bauxite industry will be even stronger,” Nico added.
The SGAR Mempawah project is managed by PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia (BAI) with 60% share ownership by INALUM and 40% by ANTAM. The project is projected to start the commercial operation in the first half of 2025.
With the presence of SGAR Mempawah, ANTAM not only strengthens the domestic supply chain but also shows its seriousness in supporting the government's downstream agenda to increase the added value of Indonesian mineral products.
