Jakarta, December 18, 2013 - PT ANTAM (Persero) Tbk (ANTAM; ASX - ATM; IDX - ANTM) today announced that the company had officially terminated its bauxite mining activities at Kijang, Riau Islands. The closing ceremony was conducted by ANTAM's Operations Director, Tedy Badrujaman and attended by the Vice Regent of Bintan, Khazali. The mine closure was part of ANTAM's commitment to implement good mining practices. Inline with the termination of mining activities at Kijang bauxite mine, ANTAM has conducted bauxite mining activities in West Kalimantan region.
ANTAM's Operations Director, Tedy Badrujaman said,
"The mine closure and post mining activities at the Kijang bauxite mine reflect ANTAM's implementation of good mining practices. ANTAM is committed to provide optimal benefits for its stakeholders, since the opening of the mine until the end of mine life and post mining period."
The Kijang bauxite mine, named after Mount Kijang, was managed by a Dutch company, Naamloze Vennootschap Nederlandsch Indische Bauxit Exploitatie Maatschappij since 1935. In 1959, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia officially took over the Kijang mine and subsequently handed its management to ANTAM in 1968. ANTAM ceased its bauxite mining operations in Kijang since September 22, 2009; nonetheless ANTAM continued to conduct various post mining programs comprising of reclamation, re-vegetation as well as corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, focusing on environmental management and self-sustaining local economy.
In 2011 ANTAM officially inaugurated the Kijang Bauxite Mine Historical Monument and Reliefs. The construction of the monument and reliefs was one of ANTAM's contributions to preserve the region's rich mining history.
