Bauxite, the raw material for the production of alumina, was first discovered in 1924 at Kijang, Bintan Island, in the province of Riau, in northwestern Indonesia. Bauxite from Bintan Island has been mined and exported since 1935. In 1968 ANTAM acquired the mine. Thus, ANTAM is Indonesia's longest running producer of bauxite. ANTAM Bauxite commodity is produced in Tayan Bauxite Mining, West Kalimantan, its operated by West Kalimantan Bauxite Mining Business Unit.
The Tayan CGA plant employs Bayer process and is complemented with calcination facility with three stages, namely Liquor Clarification Process, Precipitation Process and Calcination Process. The process to produce CGA products in the form of aluminium hydroxide and alumina. Aluminium hydroxide is an intermediary product used toward the productions of water purification agents, smelter grade aluminium, and others. Alumina is used in the manufacturing of refractory materials and raw materials for electronic components. The Tayan CGA plant is operated by ANTAM’s Subsidiary, PT Indonesia
Chemical Alumina.
By the end of 2023, ANTAM's bauxite resources and reserves were recorded to remain solid to support the Company's operations and downstream development plans. The total consolidated bauxite reserves of ANTAM in 2023 were recorded at 121.69 million wmt, an increase of 12% from the 2022 reserves of 108.17 million wmt. This increase is in line with the mining production activities in Tayan in 2023, additional plans for supplying washed bauxite to local alumina refineries domestically, and the update of the bauxite resource model at the end of 2023. Meanwhile, the total consolidated bauxite resources of ANTAM in 2023 were recorded at 547.39 million wmt.
