Jakarta, May 31, 2019 - PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM; IDX: ANTM; ASX: ATM) welcomes the Government's plan regarding the regulation of smelter waste or slag management. This has been in line with ANTAM's efforts in processing ferronickel smelter waste (slag) in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi, which has been successful. The slag of ANTAM's ferronickel smelter waste is managed through 2 types of utilization, which is precast concrete and In Situ cast concrete.
ANTAM President Director, Arie Prabowo Ariotedjo said:
"ANTAM's efforts in ferronickel smelter waste management represent the Company's commitment to sustainable development. The company realizes that sustainability must be based on law, ethics and integration. ANTAM's sustainability pillars are: Prosperity; People; Partnership and Prudence. For ANTAM, waste management is one of the implementation of the Planet pillar, which is realized in good mining practices."
Slag from ANTAM's ferronickel processing plant in Pomalaa, Southeast Sulawesi was used as a substitute for coarse aggregate raw materials for roadbase and yardbase construction, as well as concrete construction materials named Pomalaa Beton (Poton).
During 2018 ANTAM produced 1,023,111 tons of slag. Of that amount, 99.82% is used for yardbase (1,021,238 tons), while 0.13% is used for roadbase (1,322 tons); and 0.05% for Poton (550 tons).
While Pomalaa Beton products are used for precast concrete products which reach 135,755 pieces and paving blocks reaching 725,585 pieces. While for In Situ cast concrete products it reaches 2,120 square meters. For cast in situ concrete, slag is used as a substitute for aggregates (sand and gravel) in cast concrete mixtures.
Poton products are widely used for civil works within ANTAM including: employee housing and lodging, factory support facilities, drainage, pedestrian, employee vehicle parking, sports centres and parks.
ANTAM is optimistic that the utilization of ferronickel slag is not only beneficial for maintaining a good environment, but also has economic added value if further developed. The company implements the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle approach in B3 waste management and conducts regular monitoring and evaluation of waste management.
